City Council votes tuesday giving extra legal rights based on sexual orientation

You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest, and give Him no rest till He establishes [Omaha] …and makes her a praise in the earth.”

-Isaiah 62:6 (personalized)

Rise Up Church! It is time for our city leaders to hear us as never before!

Update:

  • From last Tuesday’s public testimony the council realized how deeply the city is divided and there will be consequences however they vote.
  • It is our understanding that Councilman Gernandt is putting forth an amendment to remove all religious exemptions and private businesses from the ordinance and have it only apply to city government employment. That amendment will need to be voted on first next Tuesday and will probably be strongly resisted by the LGBT community.
  • Next Tuesday at the Council Meeting there will not be a public hearing but Council Members may call for specific testimony. Ben Gray and the LGBT community will stack the room for him to call testimony from. We need to have key leaders there and ready to speak if called on.

How you can make a difference:

  • As the Lord leads commit to “Fast & Pray” leading into next Tuesday.
  • Fill the Council Chambers next Tuesday at 2:00 PM…make it a silent citywide prayer meeting to “Watch & Pray.” If you can’t come watch & Pray on Cox 18. Prevailing prayer will change the spiritual atmosphere of the meeting and affect everything and everyone…visible and invisible.
  • Flood our council members with emails, phone calls and letters. Be brief, polite and firm in opposing the ordinance.Click here for Ordinance Reference Sheet and there is a guide for contacting leaders from the Nebraska Family Council at http://nebfc.org/?page_id=1967

Here are some additional key prayer and talking points:

  • Pray—The battle is the Lord’s! Keep your eyes on Him…follow Him where He leads.
  • The spirit behind this ordinance works through intense intimidation and fear of backlash.
  • Jean Stothert is taking the brunt of the flak. Pray for wisdom, strength & spiritual protection.
  • Gary Gernandt and Thomas Mulligan voted no with Jean in 2010. Pray for them, thank them for voting no in 2010 and encourage them to stand firm.Franklin Thompson could be the deciding vote. He professes faith in Christ. He cares about people having jobs and tries hard to balance “Church & State.” Pray that he sees how God has placed him like Esther…”For such a time as this.”
  • Pray for our lead team that we hear clearly from God. What is God telling us to do? Like Joshua at Jericho or Elijah on Mt. Carmel, we need to leave room for faith…to see opportunities where a Sovereign God wants to reveal Himself to Omaha and move the hearts of our leaders.

Some Current Talking points:

  • Discrimination in jobs was the proponent’s main thrust last Tuesday. Their emotional and tearful stories were very moving to most of us there, but where is the evidence of significant discrimination in Omaha?
  • Before a law is passed that affects so many of us there should be real evidence of significant discrimination in our city.
  • The studies and polls the proponents presented while sounding very scholarly lacked real hard scientific proof. Why did the University of Nebraska Medical Center did not officially endorse the validity of some of the studies and polls presented?
